Diamond Hill Pharmacy
Company Names, addresses, dates: 1
Diamond Hill Pharmacy, Grace cor Washington, Lynchburg VA (1902-1907)
Diamond Hill Pharmacy, 1321 Grace St, Lynchburg VA (1908-1910)
Diamond Hill Pharmacy, 1323 Grace St, Lynchburg VA (1913-1946)
Notes:
I don't know who originally started the Diamond Hill pharmacy, but the name
seems to be based on the fact that it was located in the "Diamond Hill"
neighborhood of Lynchburg. The first year it shows up in city directories
was 1902. The 1900 city directory listed the
Pennick Drug Co
at the same location (Grace cor Washington).
In 1905,
Lawrence Butts Whitehouse (1884-1959)2
came to Lynchburg and accepted a position with the pharmacy3.
In 1907, Whitehouse purchased the business.4
The last year Whitehouse was listed as the proprietor of the store in
the city directories was 1918, and starting in 1920, the proprietor was
listed as
Harry Elmore Crabtree Sr (1891-1938)5.
In 1926, the drugstore was offered for sale, as the owner was quitting
the drug business.
I'm not sure who that owner was, Whitehouse, Crabtree, or someone else.
The ad said that the business was "established over 30 years". 6.
That implies it had been around since 1896, but I could not find any
evidence in the city directories that there was a drugstore the corner
of Grace and Washington Streets in the 1890s.1
But the store continued on well past 1926, and continued to show up in
city directories up to 1946.1
