Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co, 1705 3rd street NE (1916-1917)
Notes:
Schlitz was one of the giant brewing companies that had a branch in Washington DC.
Numerous Washington Star newspaper ads from 1914 tout the fact that
Schlitz comes in a brown bottle, which protects the beer. I presume
that means the aqua colored bottle below is from before 1914.
Bottles:
book # 626 These are 9.7" BIM crown-top bottles. The left is aqua, the middle is amber, and the right is light-amber. They are all embossed: slanted script: Schlitz below that: WASHINGTON BRANCH / REGISTERED |
|
book # 626 This is similar to the above bottles, but it's got a lady-leg neck. It's embossed: slanted script: Schlitz below that: WASHINGTON BRANCH / REGISTERED base: 0128 / 2 |
This is a segment from an 1888 Sanborn map, showing the Schlitz Bottling works
at 615 D Street SW. It shows a building for Horses, presumably used to deliver
beer, as well as the bottling works building.
Note that this on this same block was Robert Portner's bottling works at 626 Va Avenue. Also the Bergner & Engel bottling works moved into the spot listed as vacant at the corner of Virginia Avenue & 6th Street. |
