Notes: Henry Cooper Barnes (1859-1937)7
was a drug clerk at the Roanoke
Budwell & Christian drugstore in 1889.1
In 1891, he teamed up with C. D. Haller
to form the Haller & Barnes Drug store.2
That firm didn't last long, as the next year (1892), Haller retired, and
Barnes became the sole owner.8
By 1898 Barnes had opened a 2nd store, and in 1901 he opened a 3rd store.
That 3rd store used the name "Barnes Drug Co".1,3
That 3rd store only lasted about 5 years, as in early 1906 it was purchased
and renamed the "Barnett-Shenk Drug Co".4
Barnes' first store closed down about 1924, but his second store continued
on.1
Barnes passed away in 19377, but his store continued using
his name. In 1948, Caroll E. Wood was the president.1
In 1954, it was announced that the store was moving. C.W. Powers
was the president at that time. The new address was 130 West Campbell
Avenue.5
The store was sold the following year (1955). At the time, it had been the
oldest drug store still operating in Roanoke. The store was closed
permanently a few weeks later.6
