Notes:
George Dowden was born c.1831 in Ireland2.
He came to the US in 18563, and started a drug store in Richmond at 6th and Broad Streets1. Vernon Grant's book4 lists him at 298 Broad Street in 1859, but I found no evidence that he was at that address in that year, so I suspect that's a misprint either in Grant's book, or in the city directory for that year.

Based on the frequency of the advertisements in Richmond newspapers, his biggest seller was "Dowden's Dental Fluid", which was sold by other druggists as well. Dowden claimed his Dental Fluid would relieve toothaches, prevent tartar, restore diseased gums, impart pearly whiteness to teeth, and provide an delightful aromatic fragrance to the mouth & breath5. It seems likely that some or all of the bottles shown below held this dental fluid.

Dowden's store at 175 Broad Street was put up for rent in July of 18596. In that same month, advertisements appear for Dowden's drug store at a new address, next to the American Hotel on Main Street7.

The last newspaper ad or article I found for Dowden's drug store was in October of 1859. It may be a coincidence, but in that same month and year Dowden put an ad in the paper saying he lost a negotiable note for $210, and offered a reward. Could loosing this note have put him temporarily out of business? Or maybe there weren't newspaper ads/articles in subsequent years due to the Civil War.

On Ancestry.com, a descendent listed the year of Dowden's death as 1863, however Dowden appears in a 1865 tax record at what looks like 244 Broad Street8, and also shows up in the 1866 Richmond City Directory at Capitol c. 11th9.
