Henry H. Denning, 1332 County, Portsmouth VA (1900-1901)
Notes: Henry Hunter Denning (1845-1918) was nicknamed "Harry".3
The 1880 US Census lists Henry as working in an apothocary for the US Navy,
in the Portsmouth Navy Yard.
He is also listed as working for the USN in the Navy Yard in the 1888 and
1889 Portsmouth City directories, although they list his name as "Harry
Dinning" (presumably a misprint).1
The 1890 & 1892 Portsmouth directories list him as a drugstore owner on
Glassgow Street. 1
In December of 1896, He sold his store to Burwell T. Riddick.
At thst time his store was located on the Corner of Glasgow & Pearl Streets.
I don't know if that indicates he had moved since 1892, as the street names
in Portsmouth have changed over the years. 2
Apparently he opened a new store shortly after, as there is a 1897 newspaper
mention of his drug store located on "County Street extended".
The last year Denning's drug store is listed in Portsmouth city directories
was 1901. 1
His store was damaged by a fire in December of 1900, which may have lead to
the end of his store.5
Another possible cause to the end of his drug store was that it was alleged
by Mr. W.B. Watson that he was enticed into Denning's drug store and beaten
by Denning and other Denning family members. Watson was suing for $10,000
damages.6
I could not find what the result of the lawsuit was.
