Notes:
 Joseph M. Burke (1861-1929)2,3 was listed in the 1888 Petersburg city directory as owning a drugstore at 407 West Washington Street. In the next city directory (1891), he was listed as the proprietor of 2 drugstores, the "Ettrick Pharmacy" in Ettrick, and the "West End Pharmacy" at 385 West Washington Street. That latter address was also his home address. In the 1893 and 1895 directories he was back to owning just 1 drugstore under his own name. 1

In 1895, Joseph graduated from the Medical College of Virginia, and became a Doctor.4
In the 1895 city directory, he was listed as both a drugstore owner and a physician. In subsequent years, he was no longer listed as a drugstore owner, just a physician.1
