Notes:
Radford Royal (1885-1976)4
became a registered pharmacist in 19105.
In 1913, he purchased a drugstore business from "Underhill & Co"
at 169 Church Street2.
Royal ran his drugstore at that location until about 1919, after which
it became "Benjamin Robins & Company", and Royal opened up the
"West Royal Candy Company". By 1923 Royal had re-opened his drug store,
this time at 76 Main Street, which had formerly been the "Sadlers Drug
Store". 1
By 1924, he had moved his drugstore to 332 Main Street.1
Things seemed to be going well until 1931, when Royal filed for
bancruptcy6.
The store re-opened under a slightly different name, "The Royal Pharmacy".
The proprietor in the subsequent years was
Maxwell Zedd (1902-1995)7 according to the city
directories, however Radford Royal was still listed as the pharmacist
in the city directories.
Zedd also owned the Zedd's Pharmacy, so my guess is that he purchased
the Royal Pharmacy and allowed Radford Royal to run it. 1
The store was still listed in the 1960 Norfolk city directory, and I don't
have access to any city directories beyond that date. Also, I could not
find any newspaper references to the Royal Pharmacy after 1956, so I don't
know when the store closed.
