S.G. Good

Company Names, addresses, dates:
  S.G. Good, New Market, VA (1885-ca.1916) 1

Notes:
Samuel Godfrey Good (1863-1951)2 worked for his father on his farm for the first 26 years of his life. In 1885, he opened a drugstore in New Market. He operated that store until 1916, when he turned over the management of that store to his son, Norman B. Good. In that year, Samuel moved to Strasburg, where he opened up a Peoples Drug Store. 1

I don't know exactly what year his store in New Market stopped being a drug store. A newspaper article in 1932 mentioned that the store was still operated by his son, but it was called the "N.B. Good Gift Shop" at that time. 3
So it appears it stopped being a drug store some time between 1916 and 1932.

Good was the owner and/or manager of the Strasburg Peoples drugstore on and off until sometime after 1932.3
He worked at other drug stores as well, and when he retired in 1941, he was the oldest druggist in Shenandoah County.1

Other Items:
good_02 This is post card of Main Street, New Market, with Good's drug store on the left. The sign on his store says:
sign: S.G.GOOD / DRUGGIST
According to the book "A Breif History of New Market and Vicinity, by Arthur L. Hildreth, this is a view at the corner of Lee Street looking North, and is from 1910. It also describes the store as "Sam Good's Drug Store".
good_03 This is a modern photo of the same intersection in the postcard above. The photo was taken in June 2014. It appears that the original building that housed Good's pharmacy is still present on the left side of the photo.
