Venable's drug store
Company Names, addresses, dates: 1
Venable's drug store, 219 Main Street, Front Royal VA, (1911-1940)
Notes:
Clarence Moreland Venable Sr. (1870-1950)2 was the owner
of Venable's drug store. He began his career working for the
Schaarman & Co
drugstore, and later with the
Trout & Turner
drugstore. 1
The 1900 and 1920 US Census listed his occupation as a drug clerk.
He attended the Richmond Medical College, department of
Pharmacy to learn to be a pharmacist. Then he opened the Venable's
Drug Store in 1911, which he continued to operate until he sold the
business (& building) in 1940. 1
I beleive the building was at 219 Main Street, based on comparing the
view in the postcard below to the current (2025) street view.
Venable may have lived in the same building as the drugstore. In 1921,
there was a fire, and the newspaper said "the fire started while Mrs.
Venable and her family were at dinner and was not discovered until
the blaze had burned up through the floor into the kitchen". Apparently
there was only $100 worth of damage, as the fire was put out fairly
quickly. 3
In 1931, there was a newspaper announcement that Venable's was getting
a new 100% electric soda fountain. I guess a soda fountain that was
"electric" was a big deal at that time.4
