Notes:
John T. Downey (1852-1903)2,3 was a grocer and liquor dealer in Alexandria VA.

His father, Thomas Downey was also a grocer and liquor dealer, and in the 1876 city directory the business was called "T. Downey & Son", with the son (John) being only 24 years old. Subsequent city directories list the store in John's name only, although it seems likely that his father continued to be involved in the business as his occupation is listed as Grocer in subsequent years.
It seemed that it was a true family business, as the 1880 Census lists both John and his father's occupation as "Grocer & Liquor Dealer", and two of his brothers (Thomas Jr & Michael) occupations as "Grocer's Clerk". The 1888 city directory listed the name of the business as "John T. Downey & Bro", with his brother Thomas D. Downey Jr. as the partner, however subsequent years don't list Thomas as a partner.

Newspaper ads from 1891 say that Downey sold bottles of Robert Portner's beer4. So it's possible that the bottle listed below held Portner's beer.
