William Bosse

Company Names, addresses, dates1:
  William Bosse, 428 4½ St West (1858)

Notes:
The only directory listing I could find for William Bosse is in 1858. He must have been a bottler for at least a few years, based on all the variations of bottles he had. The 1860 Census lists a Willaim Bosse in DC (b. 1830 in Hanover), but his occupation is listed as "wheelwright", so I don't know if that's the same guy, or just someone with the same name.

There was an announcement on June 13th 1859 that Haugstetter & Koehler had purchased a Mineral Water and Bottling establishment from Mr. William NH Maack and Mr. William Bosse, but it did not say what the address of the establishment was2. I found no other evidence of a teaming between Maack & Bosse, and Maack continues to show up in city directories at 428 4 1/2 Street both before and after 1859, so I'm not sure which establishement this article refers to. The article claimed that Haugstetter & Koehler had taken ownership all bottles with the names "Bosse" or "Maack" on them. But there was an announcement made a few days later (June 18th 1859) where Bosse refuted that claim, and made it clear that the Bottles did not convey3, and that he still owned all bottles with his name on them. My guess from all this is that Maack had teamed up with Bosse at some point, but their partnership didn't work out, so they sold their mutual ownings and went their separate ways (and both of them continued bottling mineral water).

This is a 7.25" dark green short blob top bottle with an iron pontil scar, embossed:
front: W. BOSSE / WASHINGTON / D.C.
back: THIS BOTTLE / IS / NEVER SOLD

This is a 7" green squat soda bottle embossed:
front: WM BOSSE / WASHINGTON / D.C.

base: (possibly a pontil scar)
The base of this bottle has a fairly substantial "kick up" to it, and has a circle of roughness, but no iron residue. So I'm not sure whether or not it is a pontil scar.
